About Us

This website showcases five coins that were minted under the authority of Augustus, the first Roman Emperor. These coins were selected by five students as part of the assessment for CLAS 344: From Augustus to Nero: Scandal and Intrigue in Imperial Rome, a paper taught by Gwynaeth McIntyre at the University of Otago, Dunedin, New Zealand. All of the coins within this exhibit are housed at the Otago Museum. For this exhibit, students wanted to research how Augustus used his coinage as a form of propaganda. The assessment started in July 2018 and was carried out until September 2018. After completing the research, students designed the exhibits they wanted. This meant that different groups of pupils have created different exhibits, using different coins and choosing a narrative they were intrigued by the most. The items that are presented within this exhibit do not represent complete collections from the coins at the Otago Museum in New Zealand but rather coins that the students were most interested in from the selection they had. Once the exhibit was completed the students also wrote a reflection on their research and group work. Special thanks to the Otago Museum and Gwynaeth McIntyre, CLASS344 Lecturer, who not only provided our subscription to Omeka.net but also gave us access to high definition photographs of the different coins to use for our exhibit. Our group would also like to extend our thanks to Charlotte Dunn who took the photos of the coins for the Otago Museum which were used in our exhibit.
